Founded in 1897, the Bank has grown and prospered over the years and is proud of its long history of strength, stability and service to Metuchen and the surrounding communities. You can feel confident when you do business with Metuchen Savings Bank because our financial institution is all about taking care of Main Street, not Wall Street. We are In Touch with the products and services your busy lives demand.
We were chartered as The Metuchen Building and Loan Association in 1897 to provide mortgages for the newly subdivided Woodwild Park area of Metuchen. Income Share Certificates and Installment Shares were the only two accounts offered as a source of funds for mortgage loans until 1960. Despite limited hours and services, the Association grew steadily along with the Borough of Metuchen. Through conservative management and expansion of services, Metuchen Savings Bank has survived two world wars, the Great Depression and numerous economic recessions to help thousands of people realize their dreams of home ownership.
After receiving approval for insurance of accounts in 1960, The Bank moved to Main Street and changed its name to The Metuchen Savings and Loan Association. Passbook Savings, 5-yr Certificates of Deposit, Student Loans and interest-bearing Club accounts were added. Interest was paid semi-annually. Later with advances in technology, we were able to pay interest quarterly, with daily compounding. IRA Accounts were introduced as a way for our customers to save for retirement.
As the Bank grew so did our suite of deposit and lending products. Banking hours were extended with the addition of a Walk-up Window. Interest Bearing Checking Accounts and Money Market products were introduced in the 1980’s, as well as the popular 6-month Certificate of Deposit plus Equity Loans and Commercial Mortgage Products.
The change of our Charter in 1993 to Metuchen Savings Bank allowed us to offer Commercial Checking Accounts. A Night Depository + Online Banking Services were added.
Construction of the Mortgage Office was completed in 1994, with a Drive-Up and the first Drive-Up ATM in the area. The First Time Home Buyer Mortgage and Down Payment Club were introduced. For years, Metuchen Savings Bank has maintained our reputation as a responsible lender…putting people in their dream homes, not in debt.
The Retail department relocated to 442 Main Street in 2003 offering three additional Drive-Ups, including a second Drive-Up ATM plus safe deposit boxes. Keeping pace with our commitment to electronic services, Online Mortgage Applications were first offered in 2009, Mobile Banking with Check Deposit and an Online Account Opening feature were introduced in 2015.
Throughout the Bank's history active membership in the Metuchen Area Chamber of Commerce has been an integral part of our business model. Metuchen Savings Bank remains In Touch with the needs of the business community by offering business checking, commercial mortgages + lines of credit, merchant services, a mobile payment solution and escrow management services.
A true community bank, Metuchen Savings Bank has demonstrated leadership in Metuchen and surrounding areas not only by providing service but also by example. Metuchen Savings Bank has been a generous donor to many civic organizations including Rotary Club of Metuchen, Metuchen PBA Local # 60, Metuchen’s Fire Department and First Aid Squad. Our association with the local YMCA can be traced back to its beginnings, as Charles S. Edgar was one of the original founders of both our Bank and the YMCA in our community. Our officers, directors and staff are involved members of the community and can be found at most local events held throughout the year.
